Why Patios Fail
Most patios don’t need replacing.
They simply need the joints renewing and the occasional loose slab resetting.
Over time, patio pointing naturally deteriorates due to:
- Frost and weather damage
- Pressure washing erosion
- Ground movement
- Poor original installation
- Weed growth
- Water penetration
Once the joints fail, water begins getting underneath the slabs, often causing movement and rocking paving.
Repointing patio slabs before this happens can save hundreds or even thousands of pounds compared to a full patio replacement.
Why Our Patio Repointing Lasts Longer
This is where Bristol Power Clean differs from many patio contractors.
The biggest reason patio pointing fails prematurely is poor preparation.
Many contractors simply scrape out loose material and brush new compound into shallow joints.
The problem is that there isn’t enough depth for the new pointing to properly bond.
We Cut Every Joint Properly
Before any new pointing is installed, we mechanically remove the failed joints using an angle grinder.
Each joint is cut to approximately 20mm deep and shaped into a dovetail profile wherever possible.
This creates a mechanical lock within the paving joint, helping hold the new pointing securely in place.
We Compact Every Joint By Hand
Once the chosen pointing material is installed, it is manually compacted into the joint using specialist pointing tools and trowels.
This process removes air pockets and voids that are commonly left behind when contractors simply brush in jointing compounds.
The result is:
- Stronger joints
- Better adhesion
- Improved longevity
- Reduced risk of future failure
We don’t cut corners because the preparation stage determines how long the pointing will last.
Patio Repointing Options
Not every patio is the same.
Different paving types require different solutions.
Traditional Sand & Cement Patio Pointing
Ideal for many established patios and period properties.
Traditional mortar pointing provides a solid, durable finish and remains one of the most effective methods of repointing paving slabs when installed correctly.
Sika Jointing Compound
A modern patio pointing solution suitable for many paving types.
Sika products offer flexibility, durability and an attractive finish.
Nexus Fusion Jointing Compound
One of the premium resin-based patio pointing systems available today.
Perfect for customers wanting excellent durability with reduced weed growth.
Flowpoint Grouting
Particularly suitable for:
- Cobbled driveways
- Setts
- Natural stone paving
- Specialist paving applications
Flowpoint allows complete filling of deep joints and creates an exceptionally strong finish.
Loose Patio Slab Repairs
Patio repointing often reveals a few loose slabs.
In many cases, we can lift and re-bed these at the same time.
We regularly:
- Lift loose slabs
- Re-bed paving on fresh mortar
- Eliminate rocking slabs
- Correct localised movement issues
Most repointing projects include between 1 and 8 slabs requiring attention.
If larger sections of paving have failed, we will advise whether a partial or complete patio relay would provide better long-term value.
We will always recommend the most appropriate solution rather than the most expensive one.
Patio Cleaning Included
Freshly pointed patios deserve to stay looking their best.
That’s why we apply a BAC50 biocide treatment after completion.
The treatment helps suppress:
- Algae
- Moss
- Lichen
- Organic staining
This keeps the patio brighter and cleaner for longer and often helps maintain the appearance throughout the remainder of the year and well into the following season.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Often Does Patio Pointing Need Replacing?
The lifespan of patio pointing depends on the materials used, the quality of the installation, and how much wear the patio receives. Professionally installed patio pointing can often last 10 years or more. Poorly installed joints or shallow pointing may begin failing much sooner. Proper joint preparation is one of the biggest factors affecting longevity.
What Is The Best Mix For Patio Pointing?
There is no single best patio pointing mix for every situation. Traditional sand and cement mortar remains an excellent option for many patios, while modern resin-based products such as Nexus Fusion and Sika jointing compounds can provide additional flexibility and weed resistance. The best choice depends on the paving type, joint width and the overall condition of the patio.
What Is The Best Way To Repoint A Patio?
The best way to repoint a patio is to completely remove the failed joints, clean out all debris, and install new pointing at sufficient depth. At Bristol Power Clean, we cut joints to approximately 20mm deep wherever possible before compacting the new pointing material by hand. This creates a stronger, longer-lasting finish than simply brushing new material into shallow joints.
Can Loose Patio Slabs Be Repaired?
Yes. Loose patio slabs can often be lifted and re-bedded onto fresh mortar before the patio is repointed. We regularly repair small numbers of rocking or loose slabs as part of our patio repointing service. If larger areas have failed, a partial or complete patio relay may be recommended.
How Much Does Patio Repointing Cost?
Patio repointing costs vary depending on the size of the patio, the condition of the existing joints, the type of pointing material required and whether any slab repairs are needed. The easiest way to get an accurate quote is to send us photographs of your patio via WhatsApp.
Is Resin Pointing Better Than Sand And Cement?
Both systems have their advantages. Traditional sand and cement mortar provides a strong, durable finish and has been used successfully for decades. Resin-based systems such as Nexus Fusion offer flexibility, reduced weed growth and a modern appearance. We can advise on the most suitable option for your specific patio.
How Long Does Patio Repointing Last?
When installed correctly, patio repointing can last many years. Longevity depends on the quality of preparation, depth of the joints, choice of materials and ongoing maintenance. Properly prepared and compacted joints generally perform significantly better than patios where the pointing has simply been brushed into shallow gaps.
Can Indian Sandstone Patios Be Repointed?
Absolutely. Indian sandstone is one of the most common paving materials we work with. We regularly carry out Indian sandstone patio repointing throughout Bristol using both traditional mortar and modern jointing compounds depending on the customer’s preference and the condition of the paving.
Do You Pressure Wash The Patio Before Repointing?
Yes. The patio must be thoroughly cleaned before repointing begins. Removing dirt, algae, moss and loose debris helps ensure the new pointing bonds properly and provides the best possible finish.
Why Are Weeds Growing Between My Patio Slabs?
Weeds often appear when patio joints begin to fail. Cracked or missing pointing creates spaces where seeds can settle and grow. Repointing the patio and applying a biocide treatment helps reduce future weed growth and improves the overall appearance of the paving.
Do You Apply A Weed Or Algae Treatment After Repointing?
Yes. We apply a BAC50 biocide treatment after completing the work. This helps control algae, moss, lichen and other organic growth, helping the patio stay cleaner and brighter for longer.
Can You Repoint A Patio Without Replacing The Slabs?
In most cases, yes. If the slabs themselves are still in good condition and the main problem is failing joints, repointing can completely transform the appearance and stability of the patio without the expense of replacing the paving.
What Areas Do You Cover For Patio Repointing?
We provide patio repointing services throughout Bristol, Portishead, Nailsea, Clevedon, Pill, Long Ashton, Keynsham, Yate, Bradley Stoke, Filton, Thornbury and surrounding areas.
